I am aware that this is not a verbatim translation of Rujo's first sentence but it is what I feel that R. wanted to say. Maybe this is not the way speakers of English from other regions would put it but this is the way that I would suggest it be translated for Floridians so as to feel the friendliness that I believe he is trying to convey. Although the suffix -AĴ can certainly be used for non physical things (veraĵo, okazaĵo, sciaĵo, lingvaĵo and many others) in my experience the substantive form "aĵo" is almost always used for physical things. When you're talking about something non-physical "afero" is the word normally used.

Out of interest I did a quick scan through Tekstaro and the only non physical use of "aĵo" was "Mi devas scii, Alice, almenaŭ unu aĵon" from Metropoliteno, but to my mind "afero" would be better in that phrase.

tommjames, did you notice the message from Rujo above giving examples of mostly non-physical -aĵo usages from the Fundamenta Krestomatio? I believe some of the words there are moderately common in modern usage: sensencaĵo, trovaĵo, infanaĵo, novaĵo.

Looks like you didn't read tommjames' response too carefully. He said that the suffix aĵ is used in some common non-concrete words but that the independent word aĵo is basically always concrete.

As erinja notes, I was talking about the standalone form "aĵo" (i.e. the word this thread is actually about). The non-physical usages of -AĴ in compound words are duly noted, though it will hopefully be evident I was already aware of them

We've discussed enough about the subject "aĵo". Both forms of sentence construction are possible and approved by the masters of the language. I think that from now on we will be approaching a "byzantine question" about finding out the “sex of angels”. I'm far away from offending anyone. Sorry about my English.

Huh? If you use the word (not the suffix) aĵo to indicate something non-concrete, you will sound like a beginner who doesn't speak the language well enough to know that this is not done. You can feel free to stop participating in this thread if you are bored, but please don't draw the wrong conclusion from the thread either. Every experienced speaker in this thread has said not to use aĵo for something non-concrete.

Are you talking about experienced speaker in English or in Esperanto? I don't know about your experience in Esperanto and you don't know about mine in it. You may only conclude about my capacity in English, because it is you mother language, I suppose.
