I was just reading about the stelo. I guess it was worth a try. It seems a bit overzealous to me though.

However, maybe someone who is well versed in Economic craft would be interested in trying to revive it. Bitcoin became popular because it offers something that its competitors cannot offer: Bitcoin is annoymous, desentrialized, and near impossible to track. Maybe, a revived Stelo currency could offer something similar.

Once the system is set up, the person/group would only have to convince Esperanto websites, conferences, ect. to use it as a payment method.

It would be great if the value could increase over time to interest investors. I would probably buy some of the currency myself if it was based on a good system.

There are a few problems with instituting your own currency.

How is the exchange rate with other currencies to be determined?

If the currency is to take physical form, how will you punish forgers?

Who controls the amount of the currency in circulation - ensures that devaluation by inflation doesn't occur.

If you back the currency with precious metal, who administers the convertibility?

However if you minted the 'Stelo' in gold. I would buy one.

Sorry for being pedantic but Bitcoin is not anonymous. Quite the opposite is true. Once your Bitcoin address is connected with your physical address and name, which is the case when buying something via the Internet, it is very easy to track all your payments.
The other big problem is its volatility.

Bitcoin is a good start but I think the second generation of cryptocoins is more promising.

If it is a physical product then it should be minted in precious metals to avoid forgeries.

The Stelo could be a digital encrypted currency. A cell phone app could handle the transfers.

It seems a bit over zealous for me but maybe there are some economic nerds out there who will give it a try. I would buy some just for the historical value.

Try to persuade the bitcoin community to accept the (alternative?) name spesmilo for their currency. The spesmilo (1000 spesoj) was an attempted currency of Esperantists before the First Word War. A plus for the bitcoin aficionados would be the official Unicode sign (U+20B7, ₷ ) of the spesmilo (see: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/20b7/...). As far as I know there is no bitcoin sign in Unicode.

A few things:

There was a bitcoin front-end called Spesmilo but it is unmaintained and has been broken for some time. Bitcoin-Qt now supports Esperanto as a language option.

Also, there is/was another Esperanto "currency" besides Spesmilo and the Stelo. There is/was a guy creating paper notes with Esperanto themes as artwork and selling them. I'm not aware of the current status of the project. Further, I can't remember what it was called.

Here is a blog post attempting to translate common bitcoin terms into Esperanto.

@Alkanadi, in the Dutch language forum place. I started the discussion about the recreation of the Stelo. This discussion was a short discussion. Perhaps we can Among the Esperanto culture around the world start to talk about the Stelo as a currency.

But how do we start to talk about the Stelo. How do we give the currency their shape? Do we make the currency by printing banknotes or pressing coins? Or do we give the money their shape with cheques and accounts. In which way do give the money its value? By covering in real money, gold, or mutual credit?

Remember that the currency wil have the value if we can trust the money and the person who is spending the money.

To al the Esperantists, we can make the talking easyer by starting the discussion now, and perhaps over one year ending the debat and make the currency in the way we are agreed in.

Why don't you propose that in esperanto forum? Why only in english and dutch? I think other esperantists will be interested.
