I just want to make sure that the translations are completely accurate, especially for the text of the promise itself, so I feel more comfortable having knowledgeable individuals translate it. I didn't want to make the site in Esperanto because its primarily goal is to attract people who do not yet know Esperanto, but this would be a great time to have a universal language! ridulo.gif

Additionally, I have created a Twitter account for the project - http://twitter.com/lapromeso - and plan to create a Facebook page for it soon

True, I guess I was thinking more just the navigational text would be in Esperanto as a way to sort of showcase how understandable it is (you would have to choose as many cognate words as possible). Or have double-text with their native language and Esperanto, to show how simple it is.

OR, I also just remember that a couple years ago I read about how in the early days they used to send simple Esperanto letters to non-Esperantists that had a simple grammar and translation word list on it. The words were separated with dots/dashes so a beginner could easily distinguish roots. A knowledgeable individual could essentially read the entire letter by using the dictionary-grammar key. These were of course Europeans who would have already learned one if not several foreign languages, so they already had a good understanding of language. But I could totally see a "Puzzle" or "Example" page on your site with a few paragraphs of Esperanto with a "translation key" so people could see in a few minutes how quick/easy it is to learn. Or maybe the text of the site is in Esperanto and you have an even simpler key to decipher it.

I quite liked the key idea when I read of it, but it seemed like an awful lot of preparation (if you miss one word you have a big problem). The Lernu website almost acts like a key in that one can know the grammar and just click on words to see their translations. IMHO its only weakness is constructed words where it fails to pick out the roots - something we can completely control for an example text.

I have made a lot of updates to the site. Please check it out and let me know what you think. I was thinking I might try to get Stephen Fry to tweet about the site, since he has taken the initiative to learn Esperanto and also accepts tweet requests. Preferably, this could happen Monday, on Esperanto Day. ridulo.gif

Awesome, thanks! I chose to contact Stephen Fry because he has said before that that he is interested in Esperanto. And yeah, the responses are pretty frustrating, but the list went from a total of 42 people before he tweeted it to 412 now (and counting), so a lot of people responded positively.

I see in the list of signatures a lot of names that I already recognize as people who already speak Esperanto, for example, Robb Kvasnak, Steven Brewer, and Chuck Smith (I assume that is this Chuck Smith); so I guess it is not a problem for people who already speak it to promise to learn it if 10 million other people do the same?

As true as this is, it is necessary for current supporters to sign to increase the apparent popularity of it. If I see a list of 10 names I'm a lot less likely to sign than if I see a list of 1000. It lends some apparent credibility to the project for people who don't know about it.

Yes, I received an email from an Esperantist asking me if he was allowed to make the pledge. Since I am quite new to the Esperanto movement, I do not recognize many names of people who already speak Esperanto. Therefore, even if I wanted everyone on the list to be new to Esperanto, like myself, I would not really be able to enforce such a policy. While 10 million is the goal of the campaign, chances are that if it does ever get that high, it will exceed 10 million, meaning that the few Esperantists who did sign it probably won't make too much of a difference in the long run (other than, as kasxperanto said, to help motivate people to sign in the very beginning).
