How do you say "I am watching the news"?

Is this right: Mi rigardas la novaĵojn

I don't really like how 'rigardi' is used in this respect. I want to use 'spekti' because I can't see any difference between watching a play, a film or the news. 'Rigardi' always feels like I'm saying I'm looking at the news in a sort of passive way, rather than actively watching it.

Indeed 'spekti' is the right word to use here. For news 'novaĵoj' is ok. You can also use 'aktualaĵoj'.
