The n-ending is used here to show goal of motion:

La birdo flugas ekstere = the bird is flying outside (it's already outside and flying around)
La birdo flugas eksteren = the bird is flying outside (from inside to outside)

Is the sentence "La birdo flugas hejmon" equivalent to "La birdo flugas hejmen"? Or is there some subtlety between these two sentences?
