Zamenhof's Fundamenta Krestomatio has been a recommended model of style for a century. Auld compiled the Nova Esperanta Krestomatio to allow for the evolution of the language (apart from the 'untouchable' Fundamento, of course). So that raises the question: does anyone having the later compilation really need the earlier, even with the footnotes in the recent edition? What is its value, exactly, for anyone who already has Auld's work?

I do not possess (and have not read) either book. I suppose the value of the old one would mainly be the fact that the contents are entirely different (from one point of view) and getting a look at historical Esperanto usage (from another point of view). In the sense of models of style, Esperanto style has certainly evolved since the time of Zamenhof, but Zamenhof's own style is still highly respected and seen as worthy of imitation. Though things have moved on since then, I can't really say that you could go amiss by studying it. It might be that he had some really interesting stylistic points to be 'rediscovered', that have been lost in the shuffle in the meantime. But I couldn't really say.

The Zamenhof text is available online, so it's easy enough to take a look at it.

Is it available as a pdf file? I haven't seen it among the Inko books like Lingvaj Respondoj or Proverbaro Esperanta.

It's well worth reading the original. Aside from the pedagogical value, it simple has some good interesting stories, funny jokes, etc. Plus the historical value of reading early texts - it's interesting to notice words and expressions that are no longer popular.

Tomo S. Vulpo:Is there a version of it that is not in Esperanto?
It is easier to learn a language if the instructions are not in the very language you have yet to learn.
Some bits of it have been translated into other languages, but the FK is not instructions... it's a collection of Esperanto texts, a reader for those who have already learned some Esperanto.

Interesting idea, though. Parallel translation into other languages would be a good learning resource.

Penguin books have in the past published parallel collections of short stories in various European languages and English, on facing pages. Possibly they might consider one containing a selection of the best Esperanto noveloj, especially with next year's World Congress being at a special time and place.
