I would say that roller derby is more about the "battle" than many other sports. It's basically a kind of full-contact race, with no exterior goal such as getting a ball or a puck across a goal line.
And then there is the show aspect to it — roller derby does have a professional wrestling vibe, with the athletes/performers having "stage names" and playing to the crowd.

Two of our local teams are Scare Force One and the Majority Whips.
