Hey guys! This is my first post, so forgive me if I make mistakes against the rules. I started esperanto for the third time a few weeks ago. I was doing alright this time. I am entering college though for Spanish major and told my tutor I am suspending my learning until 2017 to get started in college. Tbh though, I miss esperanto and find myself talking in it even though I stopped learning it like a week ago. Should I keep learning? I have three years in Spanish but my success with esperanto wasn't looking good and I feel like it was hindering my Spanish because I was making mistakes in Spanish because of thinking in Esperanto. Should I continue with Esperanto or wait until 2017 like what I planned? Thanks!

If, as you say, you miss it and find yourself talking it, that's a pretty good sign that you want to continue and should continue. Why give up something that you obviously like?

To some extent, it is a matter of personal choice. Yes, study of different languages which have a few similarities or things in common can cause cognitive interference. For example, among auxiliary languages I am interested in both Esperanto and Interlingua, and I find that they interfere with each other, because I am not fluent in either. Sometimes when I am trying to compose something in I-a I think of an E-o word, and when I am trying to compose something in E-o I think of an I-a word.

Yes, because some (by no means all) of the E-o vocabulary has some origin in Romance words, study of Spanish (or any other Romance language) could cause interference. This is just the way it is. However, I do not think that this is a reason to discontinue your study of E-o. It just needs a little "mental stretching."

Well, you say you've been doing Spanish for three years, so it ought to be well-embedded enough by now to not be disrupted by Esperanto.

I think you'll adapt in time. Learning Esperanto can help you during your studies of Spanish too, not just hinder them. Many roots are the same, and learning grammar concepts in Esperanto makes learning other languages much easier. At least that is my experience.

I'd recommend not completely quitting, if you like it and all. Think of it as fun rather than a "to-do". If you can't find the time or energy to study Esperanto via courses and books, try corresponding! That's what I find the most fun.

Also I as a native spanish speaker can affirm that. Esperanto have many similar words with spanish and I suppose learning esperanto would help you.
I speak spanish, english and esperanto and so many times I find myself speaking in three languages!
I'm not sure about propedeuthical properties about Esperanto but that have many common roots, that's true!

This is why Spanish speakers are so good at Esperanto.

So Zam didn't just invent a language.
He wrote the first "..... for Dummies" book.
"Esperanto, Spanish for Dummies"

Maybe that could the Esperanto moto.

It seems that lots of people confuse Esperanto for Spanish.
