I learned about Esperanto from the British comedy Red Dwarf. Rimmer apparently had aspirations of learning Esperanto as a youth and when he pretends to be the captain he used the few phrases he knew. That is, until they found an android that actually knew Esperanto and responded to him in the language.
When I saw that I thought Esperanto was some kind of evolved Spanish created for the TV show. Then my roommate told me its a real language. From there, the research nut that I am, I found out about it and decided to try learning on Lernu. I keep getting distracted and not getting far in the language, but it is already far easier than German or Spanish (both of which I failed at learning).
I was having a message chat with someone in Budapest in Esperanto (thanks largely to the Vortaro) but life gets busy.
