When to use por before an infinitive?

This is something that I'm having a hard time with.

It seems difficult to know when to use por before an infinitive. I realize that por usually means in these cases "in order to," but I've seen sentences where I'd think it would be used but then it's not, and other cases where it's used but I wouldn't expect it to be.

Is there a clear rule, or set of rules, on this?

Mi trovis kelkajn ekzemplojn el miaj lernolibroj:

Estas tempo por morti kaj tempo por naski.
Por kunligi kaj rilatigi frazojn oni povas uzi nur "k"-vortojn (kiu, kio, kia,…).
Anstataŭ labori li iris (por) aŭskulti radion.
Oni nenion povas fari, krom eble skribi al li.
Anstaŭ ol enlitiĝi li elŝaltis la lumon
Li foriris sen manĝi (kutime: Li foriris, ne manĝinte).

Thanks for the info.

I struggle with learning resources that are entirely in Esperanto but I will go through all this and try to get it figured out.
