Esperanto layout for keyboard

I use Ubunto 8.10 and not Windows. My default keyboard layout is Estonian, the others in use are Russian and Esperanto (displaced semicolon and quote). I can toggle layouts with Shift+CapsLock. But I've got a problem: the Esperanto (displaced semicolon and quote) layout does not have the "y" letter (why??) and the ordinary Esperanto layout sticks to (i.e I can move from the Estonian or Russian layout to the Esperanto layout easily- but not vice versa...) Has anyone any ideas how to overcome this? At the very present it's merely a minor - though irritating! - problem as I started to learn the Esperanto last week and therefore I use it actively only seldom. But most likely, I will use the Esperanto more often in the future...

"Y" is not an Esperanto letter. That's why the Esperanto layout doesn't contain it. I'd be surprised if it contained a "W", "X" or "Q" as well.

Thanks! Of course it's not! rido.gif It's just writing in Spanish when I'd need the "y" . And the problem arouse (as I've realized by now!) when I tried to write a message in Spanish yesterday using the Esperanto layout...

Well, better to get a 'US-international' lay-out, or a Spanish one. But at some point you might go crazy from all the different lay-outs.

The Estonian alphabet has "ä", "ö", "õ" and "ü" which the 'US-international' lacks, so this layout does not fit for me. Also, a small program in Ubuntu allows to insert "¿", "¡" and "ñ" when I need them in Spanish. The other special characters for Spanish language are available while using the Estonian layout and so - luckily!! - I don't need more layouts. Well, at least as long as I will not start learning Arabic or Chinese okulumo.gif But why should I? I'm learning Esperanto!

But I can type the ä, ö, õ and ü with this lay-out, using the " and ~ as modifiers. Anyway, glad you figured it out.

There are remapping programs out there so you can kind of make one to suite multiple needs, does WINE work with ubuntu?

Wine does work but the us-international keyboard should work and you can remap keys but it is kind of a pain. My problem is that I use the dvorak keyboard (and so should you) and there is no Esperanto version. By the way, it's great you use ubuntu.

My keybord itself has two sets of characters: the Estonian one and Russian. The "Estonian" characters are black and Russian ones red. To switch between different layouts (edit: or should I say mappings?) I use [Shift]+[CapsLock] and this works fine. For using Esperanto layout, I have to remember that x=ĉ, q=ŝ, w=ĵ, ä=ĥ, ö=ŭ and y=ĝ on my keyboard. Not too complicated!

Thanks! I'm pleased with my decision to start using Ubuntu instead of Windows indeed - though a couple of programs I need do not work under Ubuntu and Wine.
