No, it wouldn't. Your sentence means "what do I have to talk about". "Should" is "devus", so: "Pri kio mi devus paroli?".
You can also express 'should' with the -u ending if there's a subject. So, 'Pri kio mi parolu?'

One thing I can suggest, once you've got all the grammar down and have a basic vocabulary, is to participate in Esperanto chatrooms as much as possible. This will help you get your brain used to forming sentences without the pressure of a vocal environment where things flash past you too quick to be able to pick the meaning out. It's also a good way to pick up new words and grammatical constructs. Once you get good at chatting in text you can use Skype and chat to people in voice, where you can develop oral skills.

There are several Esperanto chatrooms on the internet. The best one is the esperanto channel at Freenode. Go here and enter ur nickname, and ##esperanto into the channel, and click connect.

There's also the Tujmesaĝilo available on this site.

I would study well the courses Vojaĝu kun Zam, Ana Pana, and Ana renkontas, in that order, at a steady pace, to lay a good foundation of basic grammar. After that, to increase your vocabulary there's the course Gerda Malaperis. That will do for now!

Devas works as well; it's just stronger. I see what you are saying, though.

Wow, thanks for all the comments guys! I will definitely take it all into consideration. I'm in one of the chat rooms right now ridulo.gif, and I downloaded that E-book for beginners and just started reading it. It has already taught me some really common words.

I am also going to read through the concise grammar manual, so that I'm a little more familiar with it. I wish I could find out if there are speakers in my area. It would be really convenient to have someone to practice with. malgajo.gif

Are there any other website that you recommend? (Besides this one) Also, are there other online Esperanto communities out there? I would like to have a lot of different places to go to.

robinast:A good way to increase your vocabulary quickly is to use some flash-card program (handwritten cards may be even better as handwriting seems to help memorizing more than typing). Would also be wise to memorize phrases rather than single words.

Yes, I do this too. I put six English words on one side of an index card and put their six foreign equivalents on the opposite side. I keep them wrapped up in a rubber band and put them in a plastic case I carry with me. It helps when you have a few minutes waiting in line, at the supermarket, etc to pull them out and have a quick one minute review. I've found this REALLY helps me build my vocab quickly.

I did that when I was taking the Kurso de Esperanto. It did help quite a bit.

I also think using them in writing helps A LOT! Which is why I'm taking that guy's advice who said I should write a blog. Also reading them in context is very helpful.

Mnemosyne really helps, I think. It’s a flashcard program that spaces your cards according to how well you know them, and there’s a deck of a couple thousand Esperanto words available for download (roughly sorted by frequency). (Anki is a similar program, a little more advanced; it can import Mnemosyne cards.)

By the way, what’s everyone’s definition of “fluent”? To me the word means “able to communicate one’s own ideas with little hesitation”, not “able to speak like a native” or “able to speak quickly without grammatical error”.

My definition of fluent is the ability to use the language effectively without having to think about it.
