darkweasel:ReVo has monako (but not *monko). This is a word like kubo, which is also a country name and a normal noun at the same timeYes, but we'd still have kubo/Kubo. Boy, do I hate that name "Kubo"! I think it shoulb be "Kubao" or even "Kuba"! If we are allowed to use proper names ending without "o" for people, like "Maria" and "Silvia" in Esperanto, why not allow any ending for toponyms? The upper case letter in the begining ot the word would prevent confusion at least in written texts.
Anyway, here we see another reason to use ĥ: This double meaning doesn't exist if you use it.
"Kuba estas lando en Amerika. Paris estas ĉefurbo de Francio kaj London de Anglio. Hong-Kong, Bejĵing kaj Ŝangaj estas urboj en Ĉinio."

Vilinilo: Basically because very much every language has different names for the different countries, while proper names are linked to the language of their speaker.

I admit that some of these are funny, but I don't think ĥ is a big problem. with a bit of practice you can at least make it intelligible, and that's the most important. also, most ĥ's are in proper nouns, so it's not like you have to say it that often. maybe when esperanto takes over the world and we start colonizing other planets we can start naming places using the once forgotten letter, when it sounds archaic and noble.
Ĥaĥomiĥujo! that's a nice name for a moon settlement, right? and it sounds scary, so the aliens won't dare attack it. I doubt they'd be able to pronounce it at all.

I propose alternatives for some french-esperantized words
But after all, why not ?
If Japanese, English... have difficulties with r-l, r..., why not a new vocabulary (respecting the fundamento, ok ok) ?
Of course, dictionnaries would be enormous after all the corrections of everybody.
Finally, it would be a new problem to have so much new words for an original one...

Vilinilo: I can easily distinguish R/L and Ĥ/H, but Ĵ/Ŝ, Ĉ/Ĝ, S/Z, K/G, B/P and D/T are hard for me. Of course I'm a biased German speaker.
